I also think that scientists (me definitely included) can be reluctant to face up to some of the individual elements involved in problems. Sometimes something won't work because of the combination of the project, the resources and the person doing the work, and admitting to the second and third of those without just blaming the student/postdoc requires humility and uncommon sense. In my experience, things usually don't work when they're designed badly in the first place. The smartest scientists I know are the ones who are always willing to jettison their ideas in favor of something more likely to yield interesting and useful results.
